2016 just gets crazier and crazier.
The last time Texas' largest newspaper refused to endorse the Republican nominee for president was 1964 when Barry Goldwater was on the ballot. But on Tuesday morning, The Dallas Morning News didn't simply endorse someone else...they decided to specifically slam and disqualify Donald Trump!
Trump is — or has been — at odds with nearly every GOP ideal this newspaper holds dear.Yikes!
Donald Trump is no Republican and certainly no conservative.
We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory.
Trump doesn't reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn't reflect the GOP of the future.
Donald Trump is not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote.
They could have easily stopped there and sat this one out. After all, they couldn't even bring themselves to endorse Texas' own LBJ in 1964. However, an endorsement was promised this morning and it wouldn't have surprised me if they copped out and picked Gary Johnson.
But instead, they did the brave and right thing.
There is only one serious candidate on the presidential ballot in November. We recommend Hillary Clinton.Let that sink in for a minute: For the first time since 1940, the largest (and perhaps most influential) newspaper in Texas is endorsing a Democrat for president.
We don't come to this decision easily. This newspaper has not recommended a Democrat for the nation's highest office since before World War II — if you're counting, that's more than 75 years and nearly 20 elections. The party's over-reliance on government and regulation to remedy the country's ills is at odds with our belief in private-sector ingenuity and innovation. Our values are more about individual liberty, free markets and a strong national defense.
We've been critical of Clinton's handling of certain issues in the past. But unlike Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton has experience in actual governance, a record of service and a willingness to delve into real policy.
Resume vs. resume, judgment vs. judgment, this election is no contest.
Hillary Clinton has spent years in the trenches doing the hard work needed to prepare herself to lead our nation. In this race, at this time, she deserves your vote.
That candidate is Hillary Rodham Clinton...and it's "no contest".
As a Texas Democrat, this powerful endorsement literally gives me the chills. And coming on the heels of yesterday's poll showing her ahead by one point in the state, I'm really starting to wonder if we've got a shot to turn Texas blue this year.
Perhaps it's time to give it our all and find out.
