Tim Kaine and the Importance of Virginia
True, Tim might not be an "exciting" candidate for some, but there's one thing about the pick that's definitely exciting: Hillary is now almost guaranteed to win the presidency.
Clinton was already favored in Virginia, but Kaine as running mate pretty much locks it up. And if Clinton carries the Kerry states plus Nevada (pretty safe), New Mexico (very safe), and Virginia... that equals exactly 270 electoral votes. In this scenario, Hillary would not even need to win Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Iowa or Colorado in order to win the presidency.
Obviously, Hillary needs to make sure that the "blue wall" remains intact, with particular focus on Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maine and New Hampshire. But just in case there's a crack in it, she's also looking very good in Colorado, Florida and North Carolina.
Of course, there's a solid chance that Clinton will win every "blue wall" and swing state to win in an Obama-style landslide. I'm sure she intends to. But just in case it turns out to be close, Virginia might just make the difference.
